ST FRANCIS BAY REVETMENTS - ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
Kouga Municipality is proposing to construct new revetments and repair existing revetments along parts of the St Francis Bay beach for protection against coastal erosion. Construction will mainly involve extending the existing revetment along the Spit between the marina and the sea that is prone to significant erosion by storm waves and is in danger of being completely destroyed. Repair of existing revetments along other parts of the beach would also be undertaken; this will include re-aligning revetments where necessary.
The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism has now approved this construction and repair of revetments along the SFB coastline, as per the Letter of Authority (LOA) issued 26 August 2011.

INTERPRETATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION: ST FRANCIS BAY MARINA
In March 2011, the St Francis Bay Riparian Owners Association sought legal intervention regarding the interpretation of certain sections contained in the National Environmental Management Act 1998 specifically with regard to the new proclamations setting out listed activities.
The Kouga Municipality interpreted the Act to apply to the entire St Francis Bay Marina and as a result, home owners either building new structures or renovating existing properties on the canals, were required to submit Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) prior to any construction taking place.
